when I learned to run I ran for the touch of wind through my hair when I learned to swim I swam for the caress of water on my skin when I learned to sing I sang for the joy of life within when I learned to dance I danced for the freedom vindicated now that I'm old I've forgotten the meaning if only I could regain that wondrous feeling

  1. I like this one. Its got a very melancholy ring to it, and it's almost sing-songy like a nursery rhyme but just slightly off. Also, I assume this is you writing from another narrator's perspective cuz you ain't that old :)

  2. Yes, melancholy and sing-songy are pretty typical of my writing, eh? No, I was writing from my own perspective. How often do we forget the wonder of things just because we are older and familiar with them? The world used to be so new, exciting, and wondrous. Is it still that way for you?

  4. well considering my current situation and surroundings, its not exactly fair for me to answer that question. i'm in a new city with a whole new set of experiences waiting for me. i haven't been here long enough for me to become familiar.

that being said, i do find the wonder fading in familiar places after a while. however, i don't necessarily view that as a bad thing. at some point after that wonder fades it becomes comfort and security. and eventually that wonder even becomes nostalgia. plus, if we remain in awe of something, that feeling eventually becomes the status quo and we lose the ability to recognize new wondrous things when the come into our lives.

  5. No no no! When we retain the ability to find wonder in the smallest of things then we can be truly happy with the world around us. We don't become enraptured by just a single wonder. Our awe is available to be captivated by every joy. When we were kids we could be equally as fascinated by a stunning song as a leaf falling from a tree. That is beautiful! That is cool.

Also, I tend to not become more comfortable with familiarity, but bored. And then, I lose the ability to be satisfied with what I have. That can hurt people, and that certainly hurts me. That is totally not cool.

  6. i think we may have to just agree to disagree on this one. i see where you're coming from, but i don't see everything as awe inspiring. awe is something special that only happens at very rare, special moments. at least for me.

  7. Ahh if you say so my friend! We can most certainly put this one aside. Perhaps my view of awe is flawed. I like to be awed all the time, but then wouldn't that ruin all the fun?
